Tracking the Venezuelan-affiliated Vessel 'Pursued' by American Maritime Authorities

Our team is checking images and video shared this morning that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to verify the location of where the pictures were from relied on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the video.

Identifying other structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
