The people of Israel observe second remembrance of 7 October incident as Palestinian ceasefire negotiations proceed
Israelis have gathered across the country to commemorate the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The assault resulted in in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the World War II.
Israel reacted by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as accurate by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"The aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also pledged to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will never again present a threat to Israel".
Remembrance Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities delayed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held across the country on that day.
A commemorative event for the relatives of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the families themselves, it was broadcast on Israeli broadcast stations.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' negotiating teams convened in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the terms of the proposal.
A senior delegate knowledgeable about the talks indicated that an night meeting of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The source stated the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas seeks to guarantee Israel does not resume hostilities after the first phase of the agreement.
He noted that the negotiations are "difficult and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that facilitators are working hard to reduce the differences between the both parties.
Key Matters in Negotiations
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the hostages still kept by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
- Arrangements for relief supplies deliveries
- Post-war governance of the region
Civilian Reaction
In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member lived through the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were murdered and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - told: "No place feels like home any longer and until all the hostages are released no one will feel safe."
"After we see all home once more, we can feel relief once more. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.
In front of the leader's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to express their solidarity for the relatives of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be living.
Activist Atalia Regev explained: "We need do every compromise needed for the hostages to be released. But we truly desire guarantees that we will be secure."
Research now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of Israelis want the war to conclude in exchange for the freedom of the hostages.

At the area of Nova festival, mourners assembled to honor the dead.
From the site, the noise of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the main city, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the north-west.
"When the evening falls, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. During nighttime we are sleeping together, clinging, particularly my youngest child who rests his head on me all night."
"Constantly we monitor the news to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the war will return to us."
