The megacity Wakes Up to Toxic Pollution After Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis encountered breathing extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" range.
Record-Breaking Pollution Levels
Several parts of the city recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which equals 10x the safe level established by the WHO.
In some locations, readings of toxic particulate matter reached peaks of 1800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times exceeding healthy standards.
Fireworks Ban and Recent Developments
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that covers the metropolis as colder weather begins.
Yet earlier this year, the recently formed regional leadership approached the judicial authority to seek a modification of the ban.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – historically criticized by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a balance between "heritage and public health".
Court Decision and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities approved the request, specifying that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during designated time windows throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was widespread flouting of the designated hours across the capital, with minimal monitoring regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the more environmentally friendly type.
Several recording stations throughout the capital recorded air quality reaching highest levels around midnight to the most severe measurements observed during celebrations in at least recent memory.
Cross-Border Implications
The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's the Punjab region partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants traveling from India following the celebrations.
Chronic Environmental Issue
The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have continued as a major challenge for more than 15 years, with the situation continuing to worsen.
Near celebratory seasons, the levels of hazardous particles in the atmosphere has been found to spike to 70% higher the worst readings ever measured in China's capital, which was once considered as the world's most polluted metropolis.
Various Contamination Factors
The situation in the city is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, farmers routinely burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, producing toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the city as colder air sets in.
Public Health and Economic Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million people calling home the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous research.
These hazardous conditions leads to increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.
The pollution is projected to be responsible for approximately 10k premature fatalities each year in Delhi.
