NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors from the mid-20th century.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a core platform, did not confirm he would live there right away after his victory in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the need to dedicating all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability New Yorkers voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

His home was in Astoria, Queens, a district known for its vibrant immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for showing us the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will continue to reside within me and my work," he said.

Political Debate

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his opponents, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg argued it should be a venue for official events, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment far removed from his humble Astoria digs.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "It doesn't matter the skeptics say," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

Tenants consider these apartments essential protections as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
