The Diamond Family Alternative Video Game of the Year Awards for The Past Year
So, what did you think of this year in your household? Could it be described as all as good as one might claim on online? Overflowing with A-grades for your offspring and wild costume celebrations for the grownups? Or perhaps it was a swamp of disappointment with only rare fun flotsam? And was any of it authentic, or are we all AI-generated virtual entities with perfect dental work?
I have gathered my thoughts for a reflection, whether they wanted to or not, to reflect on the paramount thing in any given year: which video games we played the most. So here goes:
Title Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"This isn't my games column."
Meanwhile, on mobile, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "searching for adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In the actual world."
Release Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He took umbrage that the question was posed. Point taken.
Game Youngest Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into theatre school, but when she took a break from vocals, she was playing Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her avatar has a thriving utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her big sister has outside the game.
Title the Partner Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. It's a long haul not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Title I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Every time I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he protests, I reply that I am doing this to toughen him up so he can mature and play games for grownups. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member of the Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is a machine. More impressive than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Title I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
No other game compared to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted strategy competitive game, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that frequently update their range is you eventually realize and realise it is all just an attempt to suck you into compulsion-based microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a legendary franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the off. I wish I could eviscerate my problems so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Cerebral Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just was short on the focused attention to give it what it needed earlier this year. With relatives staying over the festive period, I will be playing this in the early morning after family time.
Title That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was a late adopter. And it is exceptional. It just gets every single thing right. The core concept is a brilliant concept, but the effects behind the different joker cards are so imaginative it has become a game I literally would play any time. Combine that with the cleverness of the card design, and this is an definite pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Game I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a wave of criticism when I mentioned how a glitch in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of overall polish – which I recognized even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to send a message to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that in the exact way, because I respect the passion, and they are obviously an sharp judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a brutally difficult exploration-focused thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". What a joy. I understand that it has great art and is flawless if you are into this kind of thing, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my adulthood. I was around back when many games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Debate between business deals that caused concern, and high launch costs. Both morally indefensible and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, Were I I Was Ever Foolish Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the back door at bedtime.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or endless scrolling, but it burns like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the past.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the heat death of the universe.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
