Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is compounded if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
