NY Launches Portal for Public to Share ICE Videos Following Arrests of Four American Citizens
New York state attorney general has launched a new online portal encouraging locals to share photos and videos of federal immigration enforcement across New York. This step follows a shortly after a major enforcement action rattled Manhattan's Chinatown, triggering mass outcry.
American Citizens Held During ICE Operation
A US congressman announced during a Wednesday press conference that four citizens were arrested and kept for "about 24 hours" after the enforcement action. Protests broke out in New York on consecutive evenings.
"All New York residents is entitled to exist without intimidation," the attorney general stated in a statement.
"If you witnessed and documented ICE activity yesterday, I urge you to submit that footage with my office. We are pledged to examining these reports and evaluating any violations of law."
Submission Process
The form offers options to submit visual evidence of the incident, along with a section to specify where it occurred. Prior to sending, individuals must tick a option that acknowledges that "the attorney general may use any materials, images, or footage in a official report, including in a legal proceeding or public report."
Information about the Manhattan Operation
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say included more than 50 federal agents, happened in a popular district of the city where fake handbags, accessories, jewelry and other goods are regularly available en masse – typically to sightseers.
Footage of the operation show several masked and armed personnel securing and holding a man, and pushing back onlookers. Masses of New Yorkers trailed the personnel down the sidewalks. An military-style transport was noticed rolling through the Manhattan avenues.
Political Response
During a Wednesday press conference featuring the immigrant advocacy group, the congressman, a lawmaker, announced that four nationals were arrested by immigration for almost a full day and that there were "no circumstances where nationals should be taken for no reason." He noted the citizens were let go on Wednesday with no charges filed.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not to take criminals off the street," he stated. "This represents a armed campaign to create conflict. It is simply a excuse to provoke conflict for this administration to utilize the troops to stop unrest that they have created."
Widespread Condemnation
Outrage over the federal action quickly spread – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls criticized the raid, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Repeatedly, the Trump administration opts for oppressive displays that generate terror, rather than security. It must stop," a contender declared.
NYC community groups spoke out also.
"Federal officers descended on the neighborhood with military-style vehicles, masked agents and protective equipment to focus on street vendors working to survive. This action had no relation to community security and was entirely about terrorizing immigrant families and neighborhoods," said the head of a major immigrant coalition.
ICE Policies
Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the bureau has claimed it will not take into custody US citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has revealed that numerous citizens have been detained unlawfully by immigration authorities since the beginning of the present government.
Ongoing Trend
Enforcement actions have been becoming more common in NY and across the US recently.
A recent action in the city center was the earliest reported action on an housing center of the current administration. Demonstrations opposing federal operations are widespread including allegations of aggression and cruel conditions.
Most recently, a submission provided by advocacy organizations stated medical neglect of pregnant women in ICE facilities.
