Jurgen Klopp admits rejoining to coach Liverpool is plausible in theory.
Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down from Anfield in 2024, remarked that returning someday remains an option. The 58-year-old, following a hugely successful nine-year spell that included continental glory and ending the club's long wait in 30 years, now holds roles in a global football capacity within the Red Bull organization and as an advisor for the DFL.
Fan Sentiment and Klopp’s Candid Remarks
The club claimed England's top flight last season, but many fans who revere Klopp would be thrilled by the possibility of his potential comeback. In a wide-ranging interview, he told Steven Bartlett: “I said I refuse to lead another team on English soil. Which implies if then it’s Liverpool...yes. In theory, it could happen.”
“I’m 58, that means I could make the decision down the line, who knows. Is a decision required immediately? In that case, I'd stay away. But thank God, no such pressure exists. I'll simply watch how things unfold.”
Conditions for a Comeback
Pressed on the specific conditions would have to unfold to tempt his return to management, he confessed he isn't eager to such a return. “It's unclear to me, I enjoy my current role,” he stated. “I don’t miss coaching; No desire to be during downpours for lengthy sessions; No need for interviews four times, three times a week or having 10-12 interviews a week.
“The locker room isn't missed in that context, but sitting in a restaurant with the players enjoying conversation, I appreciate that. With many victories meaning regularly great spirits at the club. Remaining with me is Van Dijk's laughter in my ear for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He commended regarding Arne Slot, praising him for the tweaks that took the title last term. Liverpool have lost a string of losses in every contest after a summer spending spree, yet he dismissed the idea it could be the start of a downward turn.
“[Liverpool have] a phenomenal forward like Florian Wirtz, you will all eat your words if you use the wrong words. An outstanding player. The French striker, superb talent. They have a strong balanced team. No need for concern about Liverpool, they will be fine.”
Emotional Tribute for the Late Forward
Klopp also spoke emotionally on the loss of Diogo Jota, a 2020 acquisition during his tenure, and its impact for the team. The forward died tragically in a vehicle collision alongside his brother this past summer.
“Who can fill the void of such an individual? It goes beyond the player himself, it's his character. I struggle to conceive the dressing room missing him. Putting it into words is tough on this topic. A profound tragedy for his teammates also. Not a single person will ever use it as an excuse yet it's the reality. Entering the changing area where his spirit remains. Dealing with that emotionally is difficult. Impossible.”
