The British designer Antony Price, the visionary style architect who crafted many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and performative fashion, most notably the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

Price's death comes shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her US tour following her marriage.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The industry says farewell to a genuine innovator whose impact on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
