At Least 98 Palestinian Detainees Lost Their Lives in Detention Starting From October 2023, Statistics from Israel Shows
According to information provided by Israel, no fewer than 98 Palestinians have lost their lives while detained beginning in October 2023. A human rights group located in Israel has indicated that the actual toll is almost certainly substantially higher, because of many of missing people in Gaza.
Report Findings
A new investigation recorded fatalities attributed to physical violence, medical neglect, and inadequate nutrition. Researchers used freedom of information requests, medical examiner documents, and testimonies with attorneys, human rights defenders, family members, and eyewitnesses.

Despite the aggregate figure of casualties documented being significantly higher than previous assessments, it likely omits the entire scope of Palestinian loss, per the head of the prisoner monitoring division.
“Even though we are offering documentation for a greater figure of deaths than previously reported, this is an incomplete account,” he stated. “We are confident that there are yet individuals who died in confinement that we don’t know about.”
Civilian Deaths
Restricted government records shows that the vast majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who died in jail were ordinary citizens, per a simultaneous inquiry.
By May of 2024, a military intelligence database tracking all fighters in Gaza, a registry of more than 47,000 identified persons, listed only 21 deaths in custody. By that date, 65 Palestinians from Gaza had lost their lives in jail.
Prison Situation
Brutality, abuse, and further cruelty of Palestinian individuals has become routine across Israel’s jail system during two years of war. High-ranking authorities have publicly acknowledged minimal sustenance and an subterranean prison holding detainees who never see daylight.
Existing and previous prisoners and informants from the armed services have uniformly asserted systemic violations of human rights protocols.
Organized Maltreatment
The systematic abuse occurred alongside a disturbing rise in deaths recorded across no fewer than 12 prison sites in Israel. During the previous decade prior to the war, there were typically two or three deaths a year.
“This is not merely an isolated incident here and there. It is systemic and it will continue,” an official commented, partly because there is a culture of virtual exemption from consequences for fatalities and maltreatment of detainees.
Just one case of assaulting detainees has proceeded to court, with the service member given a penalty to seven months. An effort to try other suspects over a severe beating including sexual violence led to political demonstrations and the arrest of Israel’s top military lawyer, with the alleged perpetrators now requesting that charges against them are dropped.
No Legal Action
“Regardless of this large quantity of deaths, over two years not one individual has been detained,” the spokesperson stated. “There are no charges over any fatality.
“As long as these practices are being applied, each Palestinian individual in confinement is at peril, also the healthy ones, including the young ones who have no underlying conditions.”
High-Profile Cases
Some deaths in confinement have been high profile, including a 50-year-old hospital director who died in confinement after a third of a year in custody.
A detainee incarcerated with the individual stated that he was led to the exercise area by guards shortly before his demise, visibly injured and naked from the hips downward. His remains has not been returned to Gaza.
Additional detainees who perished in detention in Israel are unidentified. The prison service and military provided investigators with the number of deaths in detention, and limited other details for example the site where they perished, but not the prisoners’ names.
Identification Challenges
Regarding 21 occurrences, mainly individuals from Gaza, investigators were not able to correlate the limited information supplied by government bodies to a casualty recorded by advocacy bodies, via statements from freed prisoners or coverage in the press.
The prisoners’ relatives may not know about their loved ones’ deaths either, as Israel has created obstacles to monitor Palestinians it is detaining.
